Disclaimer and terms

Who we are

An independent, non-partisan project

Where They Stand is a voter information project built and run by one Ontario resident. We are not connected to, funded by, or working for any candidate, campaign, political party, third-party advertiser, municipality, Elections Ontario or any other government body. Names of cities and offices are used only to describe the races we cover.

Not election advertising

We don't support or oppose anyone

This site does not promote, support or oppose any candidate. Every certified candidate in a race is included in every answer, in a new random order each time, with the same space and the same design. We never rank, score or recommend candidates, and the site is built so that it can’t.

Candidates' words, not ours

We don't fact-check what candidates say

We show what candidates published on their own campaign websites, quoted word for word with a link to the page. We do not check whether their statements are true, and we do not endorse them. Any claim a candidate makes, including claims about other people or organizations, is the candidate’s own.

Websites of candidates and other third parties are their responsibility. We don’t control their content and aren’t responsible for it.

Accuracy

AI summaries can be wrong

An AI model writes each summary from the stored text of the candidates’ websites. We check every quote against that text automatically and tell you when one doesn’t match, but the model can still leave things out or describe them imperfectly. Always follow the links and read the candidate’s own words.

We read each candidate’s website once and show the date we checked it. A site may have changed since then. Contact details come from each municipality’s official candidate list. When we can’t find a candidate’s views online, that says nothing about the candidate.

Not voting advice

For official election information, ask your municipality

Nothing here is advice on how to vote. For where, when and how to vote, voter lists and ID rules, use your municipality’s official election website.

Quotes, corrections and removal

Candidates can ask us to fix or remove anything

We quote short passages from campaign websites, with credit and a link, to inform voters. If you are a candidate and think we’ve misquoted you, missed your website, or you want a quote corrected or removed, email wheretheystand2026@proton.me. We aim to respond within one day until election day.

Fair use of the site

Please don't misuse it

Don’t use automated tools to send questions, try to get around our limits or the “I’m a person” check, or use the site to harass anyone. We may limit or block access to protect the site and its costs.

Privacy

We don't keep your questions

We don’t save your questions or ask who you are. To stop misuse, we count questions per connection using a scrambled identifier that is deleted within two days. If you type a question, Cloudflare runs the “I’m a person” check. Our hosting provider (Vercel) keeps standard technical logs. We count visits anonymously, without cookies. More on How this works.

Tips

Optional, and they never change what we show

Tips through Ko-fi (opens in a new tab) help cover hosting and AI costs. They are optional. Where They Stand is not a charity and can’t issue tax receipts. We don’t accept money from candidates, campaigns, political parties or third-party advertisers, and we refund it if we receive any. Payments are handled by Ko-fi and Stripe; we never see your card details.

The legal part

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from using it or relying on it. These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and of Canada.
